Texas Is Home to the World’s Largest 3D-Printed Neighborhood, Nearing Completion

The world’s largest 3D-printed neighborhood is almost finished. Wolf Ranch, situated by the San Gabriel River in Georgetown, Texas, is a groundbreaking community featuring homes built entirely with 3D-printing technology.

Launched in 2022, the Wolf Ranch project set out to build 100 new homes. Fast forward two years, and the development is nearing completion, with the final homes receiving their finishing touches. Stay tuned as the last homes at Wolf Ranch are prepared for printing and release.

The partnership involves ICON, a Texas-based startup renowned for its expertise in large-scale 3D printing, and Lennar, a leading homebuilder in the U.S. The homes are designed in collaboration with BIG-Bjarke Ingles Group, a prestigious architectural firm known for its innovative designs.

Stuart Miller, Executive Chairman of Lennar, expressed excitement about collaborating with ICON and BIG to create a groundbreaking community of 3D-printed homes. This project aims to blend cutting-edge designs with eco-friendly elements, all while remaining budget-friendly.

“With the ongoing nationwide housing shortage, innovating construction methods has become crucial. Embracing new techniques can enhance design flexibility and boost production efficiency while keeping costs affordable.”

Every house is constructed with a state-of-the-art 3D printer, which layers concrete and various materials to create the structure from the foundation up.

The exterior walls of the house feature a ribbed design, topped with a standing seam metal roof. The roof is equipped with solar panels, providing the home with renewable energy.

According to ICON, 3D printing revolutionizes home construction by enabling rapid and efficient building processes. This technology minimizes material waste, promotes environmental sustainability, and delivers visually impressive architectural designs.

For the first time ever, robots are being used to build an entire community of homes.

Jason Ballard, co-founder and CEO of ICON, envisions a future where drones and robots take the lead in constructing neighborhoods, towns, and cities. He predicts that the Wolf Ranch community will be recognized as the pioneering site for large-scale robotic construction. Despite this exciting prospect, Ballard notes that significant progress is still needed before this vision becomes a reality.

Residents are beginning to settle into the Wolf Ranch community, which offers a diverse selection of eight floor plans. These plans vary in size from 1,574 to 2,112 square feet, providing ample living space for every lifestyle.

These homes feature 3 to 4 bedrooms and 2 to 3 bathrooms, with prices beginning at approximately $430,000.

ICON’s innovative projects extend beyond our planet. In 2022, the company secured a $57.2 million contract from NASA to advance construction technologies aimed at establishing infrastructure on the Moon and Mars.

To advance NASA’s space exploration goals, ICON’s construction systems will primarily use resources from the Moon and Mars as building materials. Their strategy includes creating 3D-printed infrastructure, including landing pads, residences, and roads.
