In 2006, 51-year-old Susan Kuhnhausen resided in Portland, Oregon. She was employ as an emergency room nurse at Providence Hospital. During this period, Susan was navigating a divorce from her estranged husband, Michael Kuhnhausen.
On September 6, 2006, after her work shift, Susan visited the hairdresser for a color treatment. She reportedly express that the change was need as she was navigating a challenging divorce.
Susan arrived home just after 6:30 pm that evening, eager to unwind. However, a man suddenly emerged from the darkness around her house, wielding a claw hammer and advancing toward her, abruptly disrupting her plans for a peaceful evening.
Her assailant struck Susan on the head, but she instinctively fought back. After a fierce struggle, she managed to overpower the attacker, putting him in a chokehold and ultimately defending herself successfully.
Susan then allegedly ran to a neighbor’s home to call 911 once her attacker was unconscious, and when police arrived, they identified him as Edward Dalton Haffey. At first, police assumed Edward was in Susan’s home to rob it, but further investigation proved otherwise.
A major red flag in this case was the absence of any signs of forced entry into Susan’s home. Additionally, the only other person who had knowledge of the home’s security alarm code was her soon-to-be ex-husband, Michael.
Law enforcement uncovered during their investigation that Edward had previously served time for serious offenses, including conspiracy to commit murder, robbery, and burglary. They also revealed that Michael had employed Edward as a janitor at one of his businesses.
Edward’s backpack contained a note that said, “Call Mike to retrieve the letter.”
After reviewing the evidence, it became evident that Edward was a hired hitman assigned to eliminate Susan, with her husband being the person who contracted him.
Police arrested Michael on charges of criminal conspiracy to commit murder. During the trial, Susan testified, stating that although she was affected by the events, she was not “destroyed” by them.
Michael admitted guilt and received a 10-year prison sentence. Subsequently, Susan filed a $1 million lawsuit against him. He died of natural causes in prison in 2014.
