Earlier this year, a 38-year-old man and his then-girlfriend, aged 36, went to a friend’s wedding together while they were still a couple. However, by the end of the event, he uncovered a shocking truth: his partner had been unfaithful, involved in an affair with her boss.

After discovering the infidelity following their wedding, the newlyweds extended an invitation to him and his ex to join them for an evening in the honeymoon suite.

At that moment, his ex had become quite intoxicated and ended up vomiting on the bathroom floor. While she was incapacitated, he took the opportunity to go through her phone.

He had suspected her of cheating for some time, and after reviewing her text messages, he confirmed his suspicions.

“I chose not to cause a disturbance. Instead, I waited until she was ready to leave the hotel and then addressed the situation with her in the car,” he remembered.

Years of effort wasted. The rest of the day is a haze.

Following his breakup with his ex, he shared details of the situation with a few friends. He was dishonest about how he found out about his ex’s infidelity.

He mentioned that there was no prior notification. Her accessed phone without any prompt and discovered the evidence.

“I was dishonest because I felt foolish and ashamed for infringing on my ex’s privacy, despite the revelations I uncovered.”

He said he saw a text from her boss on her phone and felt he had to check it out.

The deception backfired when his friends misunderstood the situation, thinking his ex intended to cheat at their friend’s wedding.

He eventually told his friends that he had never sent the text message to his boss.

“But the rest of it was accurate,” he stated.

One of his friends has been out of touch for nearly five months due to this situation. She was outraged that he allowed her to be misled for such an extended period. Additionally, she feels frustrated by how quickly he began dating again after his breakup with his previous partner.

“He vented that he initially believed her distress was due to the cheating itself, not realizing that his ex was attempting to cheat during the wedding.”

Since losing a friend over the situation, he has been questioning whether his decision to cover up how he discovered his ex’s infidelity actually made him a bad person.

Is it ethical to access someone’s phone without permission? Does discovering infidelity make it justifiable?
