Solar-Powered Streetlights for the Moon Surface

Imagine a future where the moon is illuminated by towering lunar street lamps that also serve as solar-powered batteries. These innovations will be crucial for establishing future lunar habitats, including permanent human settlements, an advanced floating train system, and cutting-edge nuclear reactors. To make these visionary constructions a reality, continuous illumination on the moon is essential.

A single day on the moon spans the equivalent of two weeks on Earth, with nights that are equally lengthy, dark, and extremely cold. To address these harsh conditions, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is funding Honeybee Robotics, a private space technology firm, to develop lunar street lamps.

Last year, the agency initiated the 10-Year Lunar Architecture (LunA-10) Capability Study as part of a broader effort to advance lunar exploration. Among the 14 companies collaborating with the agency, this company plays a key role in driving progress toward that goal.

Selected by DARPA, several companies will contribute to this initiative. These companies include Blue Origin, Cislunar Industries, Crescent Space Services LLC, Fiber Tek Inc., and Firefly Aerospace. Also involved are GITAI, Helios, ICON, Nokia of America, Northrop Grumman, Redwire Corporation, Sierra Space, and SpaceX.

Michael Nayak, Program Manager at DARPA’s Strategic Technology Office, stated, ‘LunA-10 features a diverse range of participants, from large corporations to smaller enterprises, both domestic and international. Each has presented a clear vision and a technically sound strategy for advancing toward our objective: creating a commercially viable, self-sustaining lunar infrastructure. We are eager to begin and look forward to sharing our progress with the broader lunar community.’

The companies will contribute different elements to the project, including communication and navigation techniques.

The Lunar Utility Navigation with Advanced Remote Sensing and Autonomous Beaming for Energy Redistribution (LUNARSABER) initiative is a cutting-edge streetlight project. It aims to enhance energy distribution through advanced technology.

Vishnu Sanigepalli, the lead investigator of the project, stated that each lamp will reach a height of 330 feet. These lamps are engineered to harness solar energy throughout the day and illuminate the area at night.

The lamps are tall enough to clear large craters and support up to 0.9 tons of scientific equipment.

We will place power adapters at each lamp base to recharge lunar rovers and future moon infrastructure.

By installing lamps in various locations on the moon, we could create the first lunar power grid. This network would enable interconnected lighting across the lunar surface.

To address moon construction challenges, Honeybee engineers created an automated system that transforms lamps from their base into tall cylinders. This design ensures that spacecraft would only need to transport the lamp’s base, optimizing space and resources.

The plan is in early development, and if successful, it could greatly advance lunar exploration.
